Handbuch zur Geschichte Südosteuropas (Handbook on the History of Southeast Europe)

The "Handbuch zur Geschichte Südosteuropas" (Handbook on the History of Southeast Europe) is an Institute project which began in spring 2010, to create an academic compendium suitable both for historical research as well as university teaching. A particular concern of this social-historical project is to demonstrate the multifaceted historical and cultural interdependence of southeast Europe with Europe as a whole and the Mediterranean and Near East. Following this aim, the handbook will, because of its topic- and problem-oriented arrangement as well as its content, capture a special place in the literature of southeast Europe in the German book market and beyond.
In planning are six volumes with the themes, "Sovereignty and Politics", "Language and Culture", "Economy and Society". These each experience a chronological subdivision into "Pre-modern" and "modern" with corresponding volumes. In order to succeed, the Institute aims for as broad a research base as possible, without which such a project cannot be brought to fruition.
