German periodicals from Central and Eastern Europe. The virtual merger of dispersed stocksThe project aims at providing scholars in the fields of history and cultural studies on Central and Eastern Europe with digital sources of newspapers and popular calendars. Stocks of selected German periodicals of the 19th and early 20th century from the library of the Südost-Institut (SOI) will be digitized by the University Library of Regensburg (UBR), and their content will be made searchable by OCR. Finally, the images will be accessible free of charge in the Digital Forum Central and Eastern Europe (DiFMOE), the portal of historical German periodicals in Central and Eastern Europe. Since hardly any of the newspapers is comprehensively accessible in one library, a significant effect will be the merging of stocks through the digitalization. The appointment of a coordinator responsible for eventual follow-up projects emphasizes the sustainability of the project His or her task will be to establish a network of libraries in Germany and Eastern Europe, which progressively will work towards virtually merging their holdings. After the conclusion of the first project, about 95,000 newspaper pages will be available as sources for the history of Germans in Central and Eastern Europe. This material will be valuable, inter alia, for university graduate students, as well as other relevant research projects. Of particular value will be the full-text search option, allowing to access the sources in a systematic manner. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
